Apple Silicon vs. Intel Upgrades
Understanding what parts can be upgraded on your Mac. Get clear facts on M1/M2/M3 soldered logic boards versus upgradeable Intel systems.
Upgrade Capability Comparison
| Hardware Component | Intel-Based Macs (Older) | Apple Silicon Macs (M1/M2/M3/M4) |
|---|---|---|
| Memory (RAM) Upgrades | Upgradeable on many models (27-inch iMacs, Mac mini, older MacBook Pros) using standard DDR3/DDR4 SO-DIMM memory chips. | Soldered. Memory is unified directly inside the M-series processor package. Must be configured at time of purchase. Cannot be upgraded. |
| Storage (SSD) Upgrades | Upgradeable on most models up to 2017 using proprietary PCIe blade SSDs or standard 2.5-inch SATA solid-state drives. | Soldered. Flash storage chips are permanently attached to the logic board. Post-purchase internal upgrades are impossible. |
| Processor & Graphics | Separate CPU and discrete GPU chips. Thermal throttling is common on thin laptops under heavy system loads. | Unified System on Chip (SoC) combining CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine. Highly power-efficient with minimal heat output. |
Options for Apple Silicon Users
If your current M-series Mac is running out of storage space or system RAM, here is how we can help.
Thunderbolt 4 External Storage
For M-series users running out of space. We configure high-speed (up to 2,800 MB/s) external SSDs that mount directly to your desktop for lightning-fast file editing.
Network Storage (NAS)
Set up a Synology local NAS server in your office or home. Offload massive media libraries, raw photos, and Time Machine backups over local Wi-Fi.
Certified Pre-Owned Trade-In
If your Apple Silicon Mac doesn't have enough RAM or storage, trade it in at our shop. We'll give you a credit value toward a higher-spec refurbished Mac.
Let's optimize your configuration
Not sure if your Mac is upgradeable internally? Bring it by our Anchorage storefront. We will run diagnostics, outline your hardware specifications, and explain your best performance options.
Hardware Architecture FAQs
Why did Apple move away from modular hardware upgrades? +
By integrating memory, storage, and graphics directly onto a single System on Chip (SoC), Apple eliminated the physical distance between components. This 'Unified Memory Architecture' allows the CPU and GPU to share data instantly, delivering extreme speed and efficiency that modular parts cannot match.
Can a local repair shop solder larger RAM chips to my M2 MacBook Pro? +
While some advanced micro-soldering labs attempt storage chip swaps, these procedures are highly risky, void all Apple certifications, compromise security chips (Secure Enclave), and are highly unstable. As an Apple Authorized Service Provider, we do not perform or recommend motherboard modification upgrades.
How do I check how much memory (RAM) my Mac currently has? +
Click on the Apple icon in the top-left corner of your screen, select 'About This Mac' (or 'System Settings' -> 'General' -> 'About'), and look for the 'Memory' or 'Chip' entry.
