Fusion Drive Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Fusion Drive and why does it get so slow? +

A Fusion Drive merges a tiny solid-state drive with a large, slow mechanical hard drive. When Apple introduced the APFS file system in macOS High Sierra (and newer versions like Sonoma), it was optimized purely for solid-state storage. Mechanical hard drives running APFS suffer from high latency and data fragmentation, leading to boot times of 5+ minutes and cursor lag.

How do you open the iMac screen without breaking it? +

Slim iMacs (2012 and newer) are factory-sealed with strong adhesive. We use specialized Apple service tools to cut the adhesive boundary safely, install the SSD, clean out the cooling fan, and reseal the display using official Apple replacement adhesive strips to ensure the display remains permanently attached.

Will my iMac's cooling fans run at full speed after upgrading? +

Older iMac logic boards use a proprietary thermal sensor embedded inside the factory mechanical drive. If you install a standard SSD, the fans will default to full blast (6,000 RPM) causing noise. We install official hardware adapters or diagnostic software patches to ensure your iMac's cooling fan runs silently at normal temperatures.
