MacBook Top Case Replacements
Fix sticky keys, unresponsive trackpads, and swollen batteries. Learn about Apple's top case architecture and our independent repair options.
Understanding your MacBook's Top Case
Modern MacBook Pros and Airs use a highly integrated 'top case' design. Here is why battery and keyboard repairs are linked:
Glued Battery
Apple glues the battery cells directly to the metal top case frame underneath the trackpad. Removing them requires chemical solvents or heat.
Riveted Keyboard
Keyboards are held in place by dozens of steel rivets. Individual key replacements are difficult; replacing the keyboard usually requires replacing the top metal frame.
Interconnected Trackpad
The trackpad sits directly underneath the battery. If a battery swells, it physically presses against the trackpad, causing click issues or cracked glass.
Our Repair Approaches
We offer both Apple Authorized top-case replacement assemblies and custom out-of-warranty battery refits.
Top Case Assembly Swap
We replace the entire aluminum top case (metal shell, keyboard, trackpad, and brand new battery). This is the official Apple Authorized repair path, returning the MacBook to factory specs.
Surgical Battery Replacement
For out-of-warranty machines where the keyboard works fine. We safely dissolve the adhesive, extract only the failed battery cells, clean the frame, and install a new battery. Much more affordable.
Signs of a failing battery
If your MacBook battery says 'Service Recommended', runs hot, drains in under 2 hours, or if your trackpad feels hard to click, bring it to our Tudor Blvd shop for an Apple diagnostics battery check.
Top Case & Keyboard FAQs
Why did my trackpad stop clicking when my battery degraded? +
MacBook lithium-ion batteries sit directly underneath the trackpad. As batteries age or fail, they can outgas and swell, creating upward physical pressure. This pressure blocks the trackpad from moving or clicking, and if left unchecked, can crack the trackpad glass or bend the aluminum keyboard deck.
Can you replace just a single key or keycap? +
Yes. If you have a single keycap that popped off or had its scissor clip break, we can replace the individual keycap or clip in-shop, provided the underlying switch membrane is undamaged. If the switch is torn, a full keyboard/top-case service is required.
How long does a top-case or battery service take? +
A standard battery replacement takes 24 to 48 hours. This allows our technicians to run diagnostic cycle checks on the new battery to confirm proper charging and capacity values.
